Gaining the most stunning complexion can be a difficult task, and getting the most out of your skincare routine is something that you should always endeavour to do. Not only will it boost your confidence but it is also a beautiful self-care ritual.

Today I want to talk specifically about getting a clearer and cleaner complexion, and some of the things you can do at home to help your skin feel clear and smooth. I used to have such lovely clear skin but due to an underactive thyroid, my skin (and other issues) has gone crazy over this last year or so and I’ve been working to ‘fix’ it ever since!

One thing I have learnt in this process though is that it there’s nothing wrong with not being ‘perfect’ and we set the bar way too high for ourselves sometimes. If you have set a goal for yourself like this be grateful for what you have now, visualise your ideal outcome and enjoy the process of getting there. Don’t punish yourself for not being there straight away and never try to rush it.

Here are some of the different ways that you can get a clear complexion at home.

Tighten with a lemon

Lemon is a miracle fruit for many reasons, but in terms of skincare, it does a lot to brighten and tighten your skin leading to a more youthful look. If you are looking to brighten and refresh your skin, using half a lemon and rubbing this over your skin is a great idea and it will help to brighten your complexion within a short space of time. The citric acid in your lemon is full of vitamin c and helps to encourage the production of collagen which helps maintain the elasticity of your skin.

Please remember to always wear sunscreen regardless but especially if you are using new skincare.

Use a soothing vegan yogurt mask

A soothing face mask is sometimes exactly what you need when you have been putting a little strain on your skin, and this simple mask is one that will soothe, provide protein to your skin, and will also help to get rid of any redness and puffiness.

Mix 2 tbsp vegan yogurt in a bowl with 1 tbsp vegan honey, and mix into a thick mask. Apply this to the skin, trying not to eat it, and leave for 20 minutes. The vegan honey will help to kill any bacteria trying to infect the skin and vegan yogurt will soothe. Rinse off.

Try professional treatment

One of the best ways to get rid of any redness or unevenness in your skin might be to see a professional. Whether you need to get professional rosacea treatment or you need some acne medication to help you with your skin, this may be one of the most effective and simple methods and it wonโ€™t take long for you to start seeing positive results. Sometimes leaving it to the pros is the best option.

Stay away from alcohol toner

Alcohol toner, or astringent, can be incredibly harsh on your skin and this is something that you really want to avoid if you have a sensitive complexion. Instead of applying a rough astringent that force your pores to close quickly, choose a water-based toner that will balance pH and close your pores without any issue. This will make such a difference to your skin and youโ€™ll be happier for it.

Do your research on everything you buy before you buy and use it.

Use more than one oil

Oils are a lifesaver for your skin, and there are so many to choose from that perform different tasks. When choosing oil to apply to the skin, you can choose more than one and allow them to work together to provide different benefits to your complexion. I’ve recently started using part of the Drunk Elephant range and it’s doing wonders for my skin! Vitamin E will hydrate, collagen will help with elasticity, and retinol can brighten.

Try not to get frustrated finding what works for you and don’t try everything new all at once. Give yourself time to experiment and be mindful of what you apply to your skin each day. Everyone is different and everyone’s skin needs different things.
